Ingredients

  • 6 cups apples peeled, cored, and sliced (about 6 medium apples)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup butter cold, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large mixing bowls
  • Pastry cutter or fork
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly coated. Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Add the butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the apples, pressing down lightly to create an even layer.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  6. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set and makes it easier to serve.

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For best results, use a mix of tart and sweet apples like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp.
• Avoid overmixing the topping to maintain its crumbly texture.
• Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
Food Safety:
• Ensure apples are thoroughly washed before use to remove any potential contaminants.
• Store leftovers in the refrigerator within two hours of serving to prevent spoilage.
