Equipment

  • Medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Fork for fluffing

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice rinsed until water runs clear
  • 2 cups water or low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt optional, adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter or olive oil optional, for added flavor

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, water (or broth), salt, and butter or oil if using. Bring to a boil over high heat.
  • Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 15 minutes. Avoid lifting the lid during this time to ensure even cooking.
  • After 15 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. This allows the rice to steam and become fluffy.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork before serving. Enjoy your perfectly cooked stove top rice!

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For added flavor, sauté aromatics like garlic or onions in the butter before adding the rice and water.
• Avoid stirring the rice while it cooks to prevent it from becoming mushy.
• Serve as a base for stir-fries, curries, or with grilled meats for a complete meal.
Food Safety:
• Always store cooked rice in the refrigerator within 2 hours of cooking to prevent bacterial growth.
• Consume leftover rice within 3-4 days or freeze for longer storage.
